Fasting for Health Loveland Medical Clinic Weight Loss Maintenance 48 hr protocol
I have already given you a 24 hour and 30 hour protocol for fasting. I thought I would do a quick video on my 48 hour protocol. I regularly fast 1, 2, or 3 days at a time. I do this for health benefits. You may of heard in the news of fasting’s cancer fighting benefits. Here is an article on that.
Autophagy is the body’s process of breaking down and using up damaged proteins in the body. Nobel Prize in medicine in 2016 went to a scientist working on this. Fasting is one way to increase autophagy in the body. In the standard American diet we never get to this point because we eat too much and too often. By fasting we give our body the break it needs to start autophagy. The reason fasting works on cancer cells is because most cancer cells are glucose dependent. So if you are not eating you body goes into ketosis and starts burning fat. At that point you body glucose is really low and it is starving the cancer cells. You do not have to worry that your glucose will go too low unless you are on diabetes medications.
What you see above is my glucose (86) and ketones(2.2) at the end of a 48 hour fast. You might be wondering how is it possible that my glucose is 86 when I am not eating anything. Your body has glycogen stores and it breaks this down to glucose and uses it. The body can also manufacture glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. Your body is amazing , believe me. The lowest my glucose got to in this particular 2 day fast was 52. I was completely alert and had no symptoms of hypoglycemia. Now a person who is completely carb dependent might have had some symptoms at 52. I am fully keto adapted though which is what the 22 Day Weight Loss Program does with its patients. This makes fasting easier to do. You always can do it on your own and just fast, but it is tough.
Here is my protocol.
Now my fast is not a completely true fast because I do get some calories in my coffee. Eat dinner Sunday and go to bed.
Monday morning cold glass of water, 20 minute walk, and a cowboy coffee. You can go here to see how to make the coffee. I do another coffee around 11-1pm. Around 6pm I have a bone broth with added salt. I try to go to bed early around 9pm. The next day is a complete repeat with me eating dinner around 6pm .
This is remarkably easy to do when you are keto adapted. I can’t imagine fasting without first having gone on a ketogenic diet.
