ALPHA LIPOIC ACID MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS STUDY
Lipoic acid has a potential role in treating progressive multiple sclerosis. Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) neurology department had been testing antioxidants in an animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS) to see if they could find one that was effective. They used mice and the first antioxidant they tested was lipoic acid. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) was remarkable at how effective it was. ALA was completely able to prevent and to treat this mouse model of MS. Because of the spectacular effectiveness of the ALA, the researchers at OHSU began to initiate experiments with people with MS.
RESULTS OF ALA MS STUDY
The early studies showed that ALA can be given safely to people with MS. The study also helped to determine what the proper dose was of ALA. In a two-year long pilot study with 56 participants, half got oral lipoic acid and the other half got a placebo. The main outcome measure was brain MRI’s and how the MRI changed over two years. They also did eye tests and some walking and balance measures. Blood was drawn to see what the levels of lipoic acid were in the participants.
It is really important to be studying ALA because it is an inexpensive medication available over the counter. The study revealed a 68 percent improvement over the placebo in slowing the rate of whole brain atrophy in patients with secondary progressive MS. For the sake of comparison, a clinical trial involving the recent FDA-approved pharmaceutical Ocrevus showed an 18 percent improvement over a placebo in slowing the rate of whole brain atrophy for patients with primary progressive forms of the disease. Ocrevus costs 65,000 dollars a year while ALA costs 1200 dollars a year and is more effective. You can read about the pilot study on MS here.
What I really found amazing about this study is that they used oral ALA. The company who supplied the ALA was Pure Encapsulations. They do not even produce the highest quality of ALA and it still was effective. ALA comes in two forms– the R form and the S form. Your body can use the R form, but the S form basically causes damage. If I had MS I would take ALA from Geronova Research. The reason I like this company is that they are the only ones who do blood testing to see what serum values of ALA are after ingestion. They also test other companies products to see what the actual amount of ALA is in their products. There are some pretty scary results, especially from companies that source their products from China.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS TREATMENT PROTOCOL
Loveland Medical Clinic uses a three-part protocol to treat multiple sclerosis. It is similar to their fibromyalgia protocol and chronic fatigue syndrome protocol because both are autoimmune issues. Each step in itself has a good success rate, but when you put them all together the treatment rate is even better. This three-step program is designed to reduce inflammation and boost the immune system so that it is functioning normally. We accomplish this by changing your diet, using low dose naltrexone, and replenishing nutrients in your body with Myers Vitamin IV infusions and ALA infusions.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND LOW DOSE NALTREXONE(LDN)
Naltrexone was approved by the FDA in 1984 to treat opiate and alcohol addiction. The dosage for that was between 50-300 mg per day. Low dose naltrexone is 1/10th to 1/100th of that dose. The LDN causes a brief period of opioid blockade followed by an adaptive increase in endorphin and enkephalin production. This is what causes the pain relief in multiple sclerosis patients. Low dose naltrexone has been clinically proven to be safe. You can read about current LDN trials here. Every person is different so we start at 0.5 mg per day and slowly work our way up until we find the effective dose for you. Other actions of LDN are reducing inflammation, boosts the immune system, provides a sense of well-being and satisfaction, and provides “natural” analgesia.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND LOW CARB KETO DIET
The standard American diet has a lot of sugar, refined grains, and processed foods. Research tells us that people with multiple sclerosis do not metabolize processed carbohydrates normally so their cells crave energy. The brain consumes more fuel pound for pound than any other part of the body. The brain will use glucose as its primary fuel under normal circumstances. People with multiple sclerosis are in a constant state of deficit and have difficulty meeting the energetic needs of the brain. The result is exhaustion, pain, poor sleep, and brain fog. It’s a vicious cycle because poor sleep, which is both caused by and exacerbates pain, leaves you with fewer cognitive resources to dampen down that pain enough to function. By going on a low carb keto diet you supply the body with an alternative source of energy(ketones) which solves the energetic deficits associated with the metabolic conditions underlying multiple sclerosis.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND MYERS VITAMIN IV THERAPY WITH ALA IV THERAPY
Many people who are living with multiple sclerosis swear by the Myers Vitamin IV Cocktail. The Myers Cocktail is a vitamin and mineral infusion done once a week. This infusion, named for John Myers, MD, the Baltimore doctor who first experimented with a vitamin and mineral mix of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C – helps ease multiple sclerosis pain and other symptoms, such as profound fatigue. We have added Alpha Lipoic Acid IV therapy to our protocol as well as having our patients take oral ALA. We have also found that when people are having an MS crisis that doing a high dose IV vitamin C infusion in the morning and doing an ALA IV therapy in the afternoon is really effective.
