Ketones and Ketosis
Ketones used to be only measured in diabetes to determine if someone was in ketoacidosis. Not any more. Ketosis can be an effective method to use your metabolic processes for weight loss, improve longevity, increase physical performance as well as lots of other wellness benefits. The problem lies in how do you recognize if you’re really in ketosis? As the old adage goes “test, don’t guess” when it concerns your wellness. With diabetes you measure blood sugar, for ketosis you measure ketones.
Primary Ketone you measure
The primary ketone that your body produces is beta-hydroxybutyrate( BHB). BHB is converted to acetoacetone in the cell and eventually enters the Kreb’s cycle. The point is that BHB is in the blood being carried to your cells and you can measure that. For nutritional ketosis you need to have ketones 0.5 mmol or greater. Ideally you would like to be between 1.0 and 3.0 mmol.
Precision xtra meter is expensive vs Keto-Mojo
There are many reasons why if you are on a ketogenic diet you will have to measure serum ketones. If you are like me you have the Precision Xtra meter( abbott laboratories ) and are paying up to five dollars a test strip. Well, good news for eveyone ! A new meter has come out produced by Keto Mojo which is more accurate and cheaper than any current meter on the market.
Benefits of the keto lifestyle and measuring ketones
Many people go on a keto diet to lose weight. It is only later that they realize all the additional health benefits that can be derived from living a keto lifestyle. I have talked about this in other blogs.
When you embark on a new diet you occasionally hit roadblocks. Using urine ketones for initial testing usually is sufficient. The problem is that after a couple of months your body realizes that it needs those ketones for fuel and stops excreting. Now what do you do ? This is where measuring serum ketones comes in. Ketone testing is expensive because of the cost of the test strip. Ketone strips can run you up to 5 dollars a pop. The meters and test strips were being produced by a couple big players in the bio-tech industry and they had no interest in lowering the price or developing a cheaper product. Because of this limited competition prices were remaining high and Ketone testing was not accessible to people who could use the testing for the health benefits.
Lucky for us Keto Mojo came along to disrupt the industry. Keto Mojo created an FDA approved meter and testing strips that are more accurate and affordable than any other in the market. Now ketone testing can be affordable and accurate for everyone.

What I did with my old Precision Xtra
Well, I did spend a lot of money on this machine. I used my last strip last week and I packed the machine away. I will keep it as a spare despite the fact that I have no strips for it. I do have a Contour machine that I use for glucose testing because it is so cheap. I will be doing all my ketone testing on my keto-mojo machine because you just cannot beat the price of a dollar a ketone strip.
