Fasting for Health Loveland Medical Clinic Weight Loss Maintenance
This is Siegfried Emme FNP with the Loveland Medical Clinic giving you a brief rundown on fasting. If you have done my 22 Day Weight Loss Program you are well on your way to better health and have done already a one or two 16-22 hour fast. I actually wrote this blog article for people that have stalled in their weight loss program or want to know something they can do in their maintenance phase to help improve their health and weight loss progress.
My fasting schedule
Now I practice intermittent fasting on a daily basis. My typical schedule is wake up around 5-6 am, cold glass of water, 15 minutes walk no matter the outside temperature(I live in Colorado, USA), and then a cowboy coffee. You can go HERE for one of my cowboy coffee recipes. My current recipe is actually easier to make and I will be producing a video shortly on that. Around noon I do another cowboy coffee, and then on a normal day I will eat dinner as my one meal of the day. Strictly speaking this is not a fast because of the calories in the cowboy coffee, but this does keep you in ketosis.
30 Hour Fast Schedule
I do my fast on Monday through Tuesday because I know I will be busy. I eat lunch on Monday around 11 am. I do a green tea late afternoon and then a bone broth with added Himalayan salt around 7 pm. When I get home around 830 pm I drink a cold glass of water and go to bed.
Tuesday morning is a normal morning routine for me. Cold glass of water, 15 minute walk, cowboy coffee, stretch, and then a 15 minute meditation routine. Then to work for a 12 hour shift. I do a cowboy coffee around noon, with a bone broth in the afternoon, and then break my fast with dinner anywhere between 4-6pm. You can see I am actually eating a meal both days with a 30 hour break in between.
Fasting Tips
For me one of the most important things for me to do during fasting is keep busy. That way my mind is not on eating. That is one reason I picked the Monday to Tuesday routine. You need to find something in your schedule that allows you to be occupied for the majority of your fasting time. You must stay hydrated. Drinking lots of fluids is so very key. I do add salt to my bone broth because being low on sodium is normal when fasting. When you first start with fasting increasing salt will be really important to help you avoid headaches, dizziness, and other symptoms of what is known as the keto flu. It really helps to be keto adapted prior to starting your first fast.
Fasting Benefits
Fasting has a myriad of benefits that most people do not realize. In today’s obese culture caused by insulin resistance this is a fast track way to reverse the main cause of this, insulin resistance caused by overeating. Fasting will lower insulin resistance, blood pressure, increase human growth hormone, basal metabolic rate, and decrease the fat in your liver. Mental clarity is one of the facets of fasting that the ancients knew about. This is why Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad all practiced fasting. The ancient Greeks who were not known for being overweight routinely practiced fasting to improve there mental acuity. Even in more recent times you had people like Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, Ghandi, etc practice fasting for its health benefits. It is easy and cheap. Just don’t eat.
22 Day Weight Loss Program
While the concept of fasting is easy, many people find it difficult to start. With our carbohydrate adapted bodies it takes 3 days to get into a fat burning mode and this can be miserable for some people. The 22 Day Weight Loss Program eases people into this with a controlled program. If you would like help getting started just click the bar below to find out more about our programs.
