Loveland Medical Clinic, a nurse practitioner-run clinic based in Loveland, CO, focusing on preventative medicine and weight loss, has just released a report on why low carbohydrate diets and ketogenic diets can affect weight loss in people due to their lowering of insulin resistance.
The report can be downloaded here.
Around 45 million Americans start a weight loss program each year and spend $33 billion on weight-loss products according to the Boston Medical Center. The journal “Psychosomatic Medicine” reports that mindfulness can help people make the diet changes that are necessary for people to lose weight.
Americans eat about 100 pounds of sugar a year according to the American Heart Association. This is the tip of the iceberg because all carbohydrates are broken down by the body and converted into various forms of sugar. This causes the body to produce more insulin than it was designed to do leading to insulin resistance. This is the cause of the worldwide obesity epidemic.
The Loveland Medical Clinic’s report reveals that when starting a weight loss program one of the most difficult things for people to change is their way of eating. Plans like Weight Watchers and Metabolic Research Center work on reducing the caloric intake but miss the importance of reducing the carbohydrate intake. The 22 Day Weight Loss Program takes a different path by easing people from a predominantly carb diet to a ketogenic diet. This reduces people’s insulin resistance which leads to weight loss.
The report states that carbohydrates break down into glucose and are stored as glycogen. Glucose spikes insulin levels and prevents the body from using ketones. As long as insulin is present the body cannot convert into ketosis and fat burning mode. Even worse items that contain fructose gets metabolized directly in the liver and causes fatty liver. According to the Mayo Clinic, fatty liver affects an estimated 80 to 100 million people in the United States alone. The Intensive Dietary Management program in Canada and the 22 Day Weight Loss Program in the United States both use fasting and a ketogenic diet to reverse fatty liver and obesity.
The report identifies the different foods which aid in bringing about ketosis. The report also highlights foods which can hinder this process. Among the foods listed, bread is claimed to have one of the highest glycemic index and a side effect of weight gain; pasta is reported also to have a side effect of weight gain, and fruit juices the report says are like eating multiple fruits in one drink which really spikes the insulin.
The Loveland Medical Clinic reveals in its report that sweeteners can be a problem. The clinic supports the use of Stevia in its weight loss program. Stevia, they say, is an herb and can be bought in most health food stores. The report states that Stevia has been used for over 200 years in South America.
The Loveland Medical Clinic serves residents of Loveland, Fort Collins, Greeley and Windsor areas of Northern Colorado. To learn more about the report on ketosis and low carb and how it affects weight loss visit the website below.
