Why we are deficient in Magnesium
I thought I’d make a quick video on how to make magnesium water. In our society today a lot of us are deficient in magnesium. The main reason for that is our soil used to be really nutrient and mineral rich. We used to be able to get a lot of minerals from the food we ate. Now our soil is so depleted that we can’t get enough minerals from the food we eat.
Magnesium purposes in the body
Magnesium is really important to the neurological system, the heart, muscle ATP, and a lot of other bodily functions. If you have migraines taking magnesium on a regular basis can help you with migraines. If you have an irregular heart rate it can help you with that. We give it to pregnant women who are having eclampsia. It is great with muscle cramps. Have sleep problems or insomnia, use magnesium. I mean the list goes on and on.
My Supplements
There isn’t much stuff that I supplement with but magnesium is one of them. Magnesium, vitamin d3 with k2, and sometimes omega-3s as well. One of the best pill forms of magnesium is magnesium threonate. I order this from Amazon. My favorite form is magnesium bicarbonate. Unfortunately, you can’t buy that in the store, you actually have to make it yourself. Magnesium bicarb is the most absorbable form of magnesium out there. The bicarbonate part of it also increases the pH of your blood making you more alkaline which is another really good thing.
Magnesium Water Recipe
I like to use sparkling water. Make sure there is nothing added to the water. I use Pellegrino because I can buy it by the case from Costco. I chill the water so less carbon dioxide comes out of solution when I open the bottle. I like to drink a little bit so you’ll have some space to put the milk of mag in.
I get generic milk of magnesia at Walgreens that is only magnesium hydroxide. Make sure there is no flavoring or other chemicals added. I take my measuring cup and put in 30 CC’s of MOM. This is just two tablespoons and that is 2,400 milligrams of magnesium. Next, you shake up the bottle. You can see how cloudy it is. That will clear up.
The magnesium hydroxide is actually breaking up and then recombining with the carbon dioxide and forming something called magnesium bicarbonate. It takes about five minutes for the cloudiness to actually clear up and there’ll be some sediment on the bottom of the bottle. You just shake it one more time and the end product should be completely clear. You won’t have any more fizz either. What is left will be completely flat. I do like to add a little bit of berry stevia. I put about six drops in there just for a little bit of flavoring.
How much Magnesium Water to drink
I do about a third of a cup each time I drink. I do one in the morning, one around lunchtime, and one around dinner. Each third of a cup is about 250- 300 milligrams of magnesium. Since more of this magnesium gets absorbed into your body than if you take a pill you might want to start off slowly. Remember that people take MOM purposely to get their stools moving. If you take too much too rapidly you will get loose stools.
So I recommend taking a third of a cup in the morning for a couple days to start with. Then go to twice a day for a couple more days. Then after that, you probably can go to three times a day. If you start to have loose stools back off. Personally one of these mag water bottles will last me two to three days.
I do drink a fair amount of magnesium water. If you do saunas like I do or a lot of heat exposure and sweat a lot you lose electrolytes. I lose a lot of my magnesium so I’m constantly having to replace it. That also applies to sodium so I also replenish that as well. I like to use really good salt which means Himalayan salt, Redman’ salt or Celtic sea salt. The regular over-the-counter salt you buy in the store is usually just crap. So if you are going to replenish your sodium as well make sure you’re using good quality salts.
That’s how I make my mag water. I hope you find the video and blog post useful.
