What causes a Psoriasis Flare
You went and cheated on your diet. You have been good monitoring your intake of grains, dairy, and for some of you nightshades. Some friends came over and you did a pizza and beer night. We all deserve that once in a while. Well, for some of us, we just cannot do that because our psoriasis is really sensitive and we get bad flares. Other common causes of psoriasis flare-ups are cold and dry weather, drugs such as lithium, infections, stress, and trauma to the skin. Regardless of the cause, the treatment is still the same. People think that the gluten in wheat is the only problem for people with psoriasis. I actually believe the wheat germ agglutinin(WGA) is worse. Here is a quick video on the 5 dangers of WGA.
Common treatments for Psoriasis Flare-ups
If you have lived with psoriasis all your life you probably see a dermatologist. Now your conventional doctor was trained to see a symptom and prescribe a medicine. The go-to drug for a flare-up of psoriasis is steroids. I am sure you have been down that path before. Another common prescription medication is Vitamin D analogs. The most common of these is Calcipotriene. A newer drug which is less irritating to the skin is Calcitriol. Too bad it is so expensive. An over the counter treatment which has been around a long time is coal tar. It does tend to be messy and smelly. If your doctor wants to get really fancy they might prescribe Calcineurin inhibitors. Long term use of these is linked to cancer. If you want a safe and effective treatment take the trip from your local dermatologist to Loveland Medical Clinic.
Loveland Medical Clinic Psoriasis Treatment Protocol
PSORIASIS AND LOW DOSE NALTREXONE(LDN)
Naltrexone was approved by the FDA in 1984 to treat opiate and alcohol addiction. The dosage for that was between 50-300 mg per day. Low dose naltrexone is 1/10th to 1/100th of that dose. The LDN causes a brief period of opioid blockade followed by an adaptive increase in endorphin and enkephalin production. There seems to be a connection between the gut and the skin. The LDN reduces inflammation in the body and that is the theory of how it works. You can read an interesting article about LDN and psoriasis here. Every person is different so we start at 1.5 mg per day and slowly work our way up until we find the effective dose for you. Other actions of LDN are reducing inflammation, boosts the immune system, provides a sense of well-being and satisfaction, and provides “natural” analgesia.
PSORIASIS AND LOW CARB KETO DIET
The standard American diet has a lot of sugar, refined grains, and processed foods. Research tells us that many people with psoriasis have food sensitivities that trigger their disease. The brain consumes more fuel pound for pound than any other part of the body. The brain will use glucose as its primary fuel under normal circumstances. Glucose is a dirty source of fuel for the body and if you can teach the body to burn ketones you will reduce whole-body inflammation. By going on a low carb keto diet you supply the body with an alternative source of energy(ketones) which will also allow you to do intermittent fasts which is another great way to reduce psoriasis flare.
PSORIASIS AND GLUTATHIONE AND ALPHA LIPOIC ACID IV THERAPY
Many people who are living with psoriasis swear by alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and glutathione IV infusions. During a psoriasis flare, you will need these infusions a couple of times a week. Alpha-lipoic acid has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which could be the reason it works with psoriasis. ALA is used for other skin conditions as well. Glutathione is the major antioxidant in the body. It is being used for skin conditions all over the world. You can read how glutathione reduces psoriasis symptoms here.
