Low Carb and ketosis
The Loveland Medical Clinic uses a low carb diet on all of its weight loss patients. Some clients start off sick enough that we have to put them in ketosis for a while. This is necessary in order to reverse some of their chronic illness’ such as advanced type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. When you are first starting out trying to get into ketosis you can use cheap urine dipsticks to track your progress. The problem is that it just is not very accurate. That is why I test my clients during their visits with a blood ketone meter.
Why not the Precision Xtra ketone meter
When I first started out I was using the Precision Xtra. While the machine itself was cheap they really got you with the price of the strips. The price of the strips ran between four to six dollars a strip. I could not do much testing with strips that were so expensive. Lucky for everyone the Keto Mojo came along. They took the price of the strips down to one dollar a strip. That is a price that everyone can afford. While I do not personally check myself daily anymore, I do check all my patients on their 1 month, 3 months, and 6-month visits. By the 3 month visit, 90% of my patients are in ketosis. If they were on diabetes medications a lot of them are off of some, if not all their meds. The reason you need to test is that nutritional ketosis really starts at about 0.5 mmol/L. Getting yourself to between 1.0 and 3.0 mmol/L is what I consider the sweet spot. You cannot figure that out with urine strips. Also, once your body realizes that it can use ketones as fuel it starts hoarding them and you stop urinating them out. So then you really have no idea what is going on.
Am I in ketosis ?
You can see I checked my ketones yesterday. I was in the sweet spot of 2.3 mmol/L. My daily routine is pretty easy because I only really eat one large meal per day. You can read about a typical 24 hour keto day here. The nice thing about being in ketosis is that you just do not get hungry. Your body has become metabolically flexible and if there are no carbs around it just starts to burn your fat. As I write this on Sunday afternoon my last meal was Saturday night. I even did a high-intensity workout this morning without eating. Being in ketosis is amazing and I recommend everyone do it every once in a while. No need to stay in ketosis all the time, but teach your body how to burn fat again like it was designed to do.
