When you go to your doctor for your yearly checkup they will often draw a lipid panel. This consists of a total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and HDL. Many doctors will put someone on a statin drug based on the LDL level. Do you realize that the LDL on the standard lipid panel is calculated, and not measured ? Do you also realize that it is not just the LDL number that matters, but it is the size of the LDL particles that determines your cardiac risk.
The Truth about Statin Drugs
Did you know that the upper limit of cholesterol has been lowered three times in the last 2 decades ? Who do you think profits from this ? Every time the upper limit is lowered more people get put on statin drugs. Statin drugs have been one of the most profitable drugs ever. Diet is more effective at correcting cholesterol panels than any drug. The only two levels I look at are HDL and triglycerides. These tell me if you are insulin resistant and are independent risk factors for heart disease. If you really want to know your cardiac risk get a Coronary Artery Calcium score.
cholesterol and the brain
There has been much in the media about cholesterol and its effect on heart disease. Do you know older people with low cholesterol have more neurological problems ? 25 % of the cholesterol in your body is found in the brain. Your brain needs cholesterol to function properly. 75% of the cholesterol in the body comes from the liver, not from your diet. There is no correlation between cholesterol level and heart disease until you get over 300. There is a correlation with low cholesterol and neurological problems though.
Eggs and cholesterol
My favorite source of cholesterol are eggs. The poor demonized eggs are such a good source of protein , fat , and cholesterol. Just think, they have all the nutrition in them to raise a baby bird. I only use two labs to check LDL and lipid panels. Cardio IQ from Quest and the NMR from Lab Corp. They actually measure how many particles you have and their size. You want your particle number to be under 1000 ideally and most of your LDL in the medium to large range. When I look at a standard lipid panel I only look at the HDL which I want greater than 50 and the triglycerides which I want under 100. It is useful to look at the cholesterol/HDL ratio which you want less than 3. All these numbers can be controlled with diet alone unless you have a genetic form of cholesterol abnormality. What lab test should you worry about
Here are some labs that I do order and check on my patients: fasting insulin, HgA1C, Vit D OH25, GGT, serum ferritin, and a lipid panel. I will write more posts in the future on why I do these specific labs. Life insurance companies have found that a GGT is the biggest indicator of mortality of all the labs mentioned. Look it up.
