What is IV Alpha Lipoic Acid Therapy
IV alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is used in countries around the world to treat cancer, neuropathy and chronic liver disease. This fatty acid is a powerful antioxidant, like vitamin C, that is made by the body and can be found in small quantities in many foods. Alpha lipoic acid is made inside the mitochondria where it helps enzymes turn nutrients into energy. Alpha-lipoic acid is unique in that it is both water-soluble and fat-soluble. This allows ALA to work in every cell in the body ALA helps protect cells from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species. The antioxidant properties of alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, slow skin aging and improve nerve function.
IV ALA for Cancer
Dr. Burton Berkson and D. Rubin are pioneers of using IV ALA for treatment for cancer patients. Burton and Rubin describe the long-term survival of a patient with renal cancer with lung metastasis using intravenous alpha-lipoic acid and low-dose naltrexone orally. The patient was told by his oncologist in 2008 that there was little hope for his survival and he should get palliative care. The patient, with the above treatment, is alive and well in November 2017 with the treatment protocol that Dr. Berkson created. The authors report he is back at work, free from symptoms, and without appreciable progression of his malignancy.
The benefits of using IV alpha lipoic acid for cancer treatment include:
- ALA reduces oxidative stress
- its ability to turn off NF(k) B. Incorrect regulation of this factor is linked to cancer.
- its ability to stimulate pro-oxidant cancer cell death similar to high dose IV Vitamin C
- its discriminative ability to discourage the proliferation of malignant cells
- the ability of low dose naltrexone to control the bodies immune response
ALA protects against the death of normal cells from oxidative stress while inducing cell death in cancer cells. In colon cancer cells, this fatty acid enhances the uptake of oxidizable substrates into mitochondria, increasing oxidative stress and inducing cell death in tumors. Furthermore, ALA also mediates cell death in lung cancer cells by regulating oxidative stress. Other types of cancers that ALA has been successful in treating include pancreatic and liver cancers. The Riodan Clinic in Kansas has successfully treated a patient with bladder cancer with a combination of IV vitamin C and alpha lipoic acid.
Is IV Alpha Lipoic Acid Therapy Safe
The Loveland Medical Clinic has administered dozens of IV Alpha Lipoic Acid treatments safely at the clinic. The people we treat have a variety of chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and cancer. Alpha lipoic acid is destroyed by light so it is delivered with protection of the IV bag from light exposure. The most severe reactions we’ve experienced are patients feeling nausea following the treatment. This clears in a short time after the completion of the therapy. Remember, your body makes ALA, just not in the quantities you will be getting with IV ALA therapy.
Although chemotherapy is a life-saving form of treatment, a common side effect is peripheral neuropathy. Diabetics can also get peripheral neuropathy. IV ALA can be used to reduce neuropathic pain from chemotherapy or diabetes.
IV ALA can cause hypoglycemia in some people. For those people, it is important that you eat before therapy or bring snacks with you. It is also important that your vitamin B1 is at a normal level as ALA depletes this vitamin. IV ALA therapy would not be a good idea for alcoholics or anyone else that is suffering from malnutrition.
Is IV Alpha Lipoic Acid Right for Me?
You can supplement with ALA orally. The problem is that the liver will use up that source very fast and the rest of your body will not get the benefit. When you get IV ALA therapy your whole body can benefit. While ALA is present in foods, it is only in small quantities. By supplementing you can get up to 1000 times more ALA. High doses are not recommended. We usually dose our IV ALA to 10mg/kg to a max of 15mg/kg. We also dilute our ALA in a liter of normal saline. If you are interested in this treatment give us a call and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
